Netlify paused my site: move it in two minutes

You open your site and get "Site not available", or Netlify emails to say your projects are paused. If the site is plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, you can download what Netlify was serving and have it back online at a link like my-portfolio.flatpage.page in a couple of minutes.

Short answer

Netlify's Free plan comes with 300 credits a month and each production deploy uses 15. When the credits run out, Netlify pauses every project on the account. To move a static site, open the site in Netlify, go to Deploys, open your latest published deploy and download it as a zip, then drop that zip on Flatpage.

Why Netlify paused it

Netlify's current plans are credit-based. According to Netlify's documentation, the Free plan has a hard limit of 300 credits a month. Each successful production deploy costs 15 credits, and bandwidth costs 20 credits per GB, with web requests and functions also counted. "Once your credit balance is completely used up, all of your web projects (sites/apps) are paused and visitors to your web projects will find a Site not available page." Twenty deploys in a month is enough to hit the limit on deploys alone, before any traffic.

That's a pricing choice, not a fault in your site. Credits reset each billing cycle, and Netlify's paid plans include more.

Move a static site in three steps

  1. Download the deploy

In Netlify, open the site, go to Deploys and choose your latest published deploy. Use the download option on the deploy's details page to get every file as one zip.
  2. Drop the zip here

Sign in with your email and drag the zip onto your dashboard. It's checked for viruses and live in seconds, at a new HTTPS link.
  3. Update your links

Send people the new link and update it where you'd posted the old one. Replace the zip whenever you change the site; the link stays the same.

What Flatpage does differently

  • A flat price. Free for one site, or a fixed monthly price for more. See pricing.
  • No meters. No credits, no bandwidth bill and no charge per deploy. Upload as often as your plan's daily limit allows.
  • No traffic cap. We never take a site down because of traffic. If your page gets busy, it stays up.

What won't move (honest limits)

Flatpage serves static files only. Check this list before you switch:

  • Netlify Functions and Edge Functions don't run. Anything in the page that calls them will fail.
  • Netlify Forms won't collect submissions. Use a form service that gives you a plain form action URL instead.
  • Redirect and header rules in _redirects, _headers or netlify.toml are ignored. Single-page apps that rely on a catch-all rewrite will show a not-found page on deep links; links to the home page work.
  • Pretty URLs: Netlify can serve about.html at /about. Here, /about works when the file is about/index.html; otherwise link to /about.html.
  • Builds don't run here. You upload the built files, so build on your computer or download them from Netlify each time.

If your site depends on any of these, staying on Netlify (or a paid plan there) is the better choice. For portfolios, landing pages, docs, menus and pages an AI tool built for you, static is all you need.

Check it worked

  • Open the new link in a private window and click through every page.
  • Look for broken images. They usually mean a path that started with a full URL to your old .netlify.app address. Make it relative and upload again.
  • Open it on your phone, on mobile data.

Questions

Will my site come back on Netlify by itself?
Netlify's monthly plan credits reset at the start of each billing cycle, so a paused Free site can come back then. Until it does, visitors see Netlify's “Site not available” page. Upgrading to a paid Netlify plan resumes it sooner, since the Free plan's limit is a hard one.
Does the zip include my source code?
No. It holds the built files Netlify was serving: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images and fonts. That's exactly what a static host needs. Your source stays wherever it already is, such as your Git repository.
Can I download the deploy while the site is paused?
Yes, as far as we know: pausing stops Netlify serving the site to visitors, and your deploys stay in your dashboard. If the download isn't offered, build the site again on your own computer and zip the output folder (often dist, build or public).
Do you charge for traffic or deploys?
No. Plans are a flat monthly price, or free for one site. There are no credits, no bandwidth meter and no charge per upload, and we never take a site down because of traffic.
What if my site uses Netlify Functions or Forms?
Those need Netlify's servers, so they won't work on Flatpage. The pages still load, but forms won't submit and anything that calls a function will fail. Point the form at a form service, or keep that site on Netlify.
Is there a limit on the zip?
Up to 10 MB and 3 uploads a day on the free plan, 100 MB on Starter and 500 MB on Plus, with up to 2,000 files. Common web file types are kept (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, media and PDFs); anything else in the zip, such as _redirects or netlify.toml, is skipped.
